SHEAR POWER! BRUTE STRENGTH! These are terms which have frequently described the virtues of the largest of the Pacific salmon. And battling a Kenai River king salmon has very few equals in the world of freshwater fishing. These fish can turn on a dime and be on the other side of the boat in seconds, or worse, sulk underneath the boat, only to bury half the rod in the river if they dive for the bottom in a deep hole. They can strip 50 to 100 yards of line on the initial take before everyone else in the boat can reel in and clear their lines. Your guide definitely earns his keep during these feisty battles which may last from 20 to 40 minutes or longer for a really huge fish. Add a few other boats in the area, perhaps with their own hookups and things always remain "interesting." By the time an angler has succeeded in landing one of the big Kenai "hogs" they will feel like they have went a few rounds in the ring with George Foreman.
