| The Kenai River's remarkable rainbow trout fishery entertains our guests throughout the summer, but FALL is the magical time for catching the real bruisers in the river. Beginning in mid-August the early summer runs of salmon have started to spawn, and this activity attracts hoardes of rainbows and Dolly Varden who station below spawning fish to ambush loose eggs washing from the gravel. This period, which continues until ice-over, is a trout's last major opportunity to "bulk up" for the long winter ahead and to store reserves which will get them through their own spring spawning rituals. As salmon begin to die, the carcasses decompose and break apart. These chunks of flesh are the next course on the banquet table and provide pure protein for the inriver natives.
During this fishing period fly fishing is in its prime with egg patterns and flesh flies producing with exceptional results. These patterns can also be fished with spin gear for those who prefer that tackle. The rewards are the same....heavy-bodied fish from a truly world-class trophy fishery you will want to return to again.
