These three anglers all found royalty in the kings they caught on this remote fly-in day trip. It was a three generation - grandpa, father, son - vacation and they decided to participate in some fishing that was a bit more unusual and unique. Their choice was to fish the Chuitna River on the west side of Cook Inlet for king salmon. The stream as you can see is very easy to wade and fish and the waters run clear enough to spot your targets in the holes they are resting in.

The season is very short for this run, lasting from around June 5 when fish first arrive to June 30 when the season closes by regulation. The limit is one per day, and its an artificial lure only (no bait) fishery. Fish run in all sizes from 15 pounds to fish that have exceeded 40 pounds. Fishing medium weight tackle with flies or lures makes the action highly memorable. And you won't find hoards of other anglers on this stream competing. The flowing waters above the tidal zone run through much native village property that is off-limits to outsiders. This leaves the remote upper stretch of open land...but access requires some exciting ingenuity. Anglers fly from Kenai to a lake on the west side by floatplane, and are then transferred and shuttled to ideal sections of the stream by helicopter, essentially putting them on the most productive section of the river that day. Seating and reservations are limited on this excursion so its best to inquire as early as possible if you have an interest in this trip.
